Wondering what it takes to be a UX researcher and designer in today’s world? In this blog, we discuss three applied skills that will be highly valued in the current UX field.

A/B Testing

Being able to design and implement a feasible experiment is valuable to any user experience researcher. As lead designer at Booking.com, Zoe Gillenwater, describes, the benefit of A/B is that “It forces you to stop making design decisions based on your personal preferences, biases, and ego, and instead lets your users ‘vote’ via their behavior.”

Statistical Analysis

When we say statistical analysis, we don’t just mean Excel basics. Understanding how to collect a randomized sample that is large enough to represent the population in question, otherwise known as inferential statistics, is a vital skill. Statistical analysis can be applied to focus groups, surveys, user data, and ROI for various media channels. Higher level methods of statistics - such as advanced math modeling - as well as different interpretations of the data - like conversions into intervals and frequencies - can also be used to gain an understanding of your target population.

Actionable & Inspiring Insights

After using techniques such as A/B testing and forms of statistical analysis, you must draw conclusions from the collected data. Creating actionable insights that are meaningful to the user by outlining 1) your design, 2) your product), and 3) business implications. Insights must also inspire users to take action through the use of empathy. By providing insights that are both actionable and inspiring, you will be highly valued as a UX researcher and designer.

Final Thoughts

Using A/B testing and statistical analysis, you can collect reliable data on your users by limiting bias through randomization. This data will enable you to come up with actionable & inspiring insights that will leave a large impact on your client and/or firm.
